{"id":71,"date":"2013-09-08T04:54:43","date_gmt":"2013-09-08T04:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sarahguppy.co.nz\/website\/?page_id=71"},"modified":"2025-03-21T11:16:05","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T23:16:05","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sarahguppy.co.nz\/website\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div class=\"one_half\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/sarahguppy.co.nz\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Sarah-Guppy-Artist.jpg\" alt=\"Sarah Guppy Artist\" width=\"333\" height=\"461\" data-id=\"106\" \/><\/div><div class=\"one_half_last\"><p><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">SARAH GUPPY \u2013 AUCKLAND<\/span><br \/>PAINTER, POTTER, GILDER<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Artist Sarah Guppy is a painter, potter and gilder living and working in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was born. <\/span><\/p><p>Sarah Guppy\u2019s <a title=\"Paintings - Sarah Guppy\" href=\"http:\/\/sarahguppy.co.nz\/painting\">paintings <\/a>are held in several private collections internationally and she has participated in numerous group and solo shows in both the UK and New Zealand.<\/p><p>Her <a title=\"Sarah Guppy - Giliding Projects\" href=\"http:\/\/sarahguppy.co.nz\/gilding\">gilding <\/a>work has adorned high-profile buildings and interiors in the UK and in Auckland.<\/p><p>Her clay figurines and <a title=\"Sarah Guppy - Pottery\" href=\"http:\/\/sarahguppy.co.nz\/pottery\">pottery <\/a>are sold through select New Zealand retail outlets, as well as private commissions.<\/p><p><\/p><\/div><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><hr \/><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0My career as a painter began in 1973, when I studied fine art at the Auckland Society of Arts, and then graphic design at the Auckland Technical Institute. In 1978 I moved to London where I studied fine art at Morley College under Maggi Hambling (OBE,CBE), a notable teacher and artist. Over the following 18 years I absorbed influences from English and European painting and culture.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While in London I became an apprentice gilder to Christina Leder, a bespoke frame-maker, who supplied the West End galleries and many Royal Academy painters. I later worked for Carvers and Gilders of Wandsworth, whose work included restorations for the Royal Collection and the National Trust.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decorative skills I developed in this work have been incorporated into my work as a painter and, more recently, as a potter.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1996 I returned from London to live in Auckland, where I continue to paint, gild and create with clay.
